Practical Skills in dealing with Extreme Persistent and Difficult Staff Behaviours (Part 2)


Psychotherapist Martin J Smith, lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, will share his expertise, equipping delegates to feel more confident about what to do with colleagues who they find tricky to work with. The Acas adviser will offer best practice workplace advice for these issues.

This workshop is a follow-up to the initial workshop on extreme persistent difficult behaviour. It seeks to give participants the opportunity to apply skills and ideas developed from the first session. Therefore it is a prerequisite that delegates have already attended the initial workshop.

Difficult staff behaviour seems to be a growing problem in many organisations. Most people behave well most of the time, but problems can develop in the workplace with staff that show extreme, persistent and difficult behaviour.

Through interactive exercises this event will cover:

  • An overview of extreme difficult behaviour types and personality issues common to this behaviour
  • Practice around identifying common language used by these challenging individuals at interview, in the workplace, and in their writing
  • Practice around utilising skills and strategies highlighted in the previous course, through interactive exercises
  • Other areas where these difficult behaviours might be a concern e.g. appraisals, initial interviews, and applications for promotion
  • Establishing the boundaries: Acas good practice in managing performance
  • A review of key warning signs to help tackle extreme difficult behaviour at an early stage
