• empowering employees through mediation

• building the resilience of managers confronted with extreme behaviours and personalities.

Suitable For

Delegates from all sectors of industry including: managers, supervisors, team leaders, HR professionals, business owners, Trade Union representatives, employee representatives and individuals who wish enhance their CPD.

Programme

Masterclass 1: Solving the productivity puzzle; James Forse, Senior Acas Adviser

The UK workforce produces less per hour than our main economic competitors. A range of solutions have been offered by government, business and others but these can only yield lasting improvements if workplaces are operating at their best. James will share practical advice and discuss how Acas can help your business increase productivity.

Masterclass 2: The future of Performance Management; David Jones, Senior Acas Adviser.

Managing performance is an essential element in the employment relationship between managers and employees. It’s about creating a culture which encourages the continuous improvement of business processes, employee’s skills, behaviour and contributions. David will discuss best practice around performance management and will take a look into the future of performance management trends in the UK.

Masterclass 3: Uncontrollable - Unmanageable – Unworkable Martin Smith, PhD, Senior lecturer, Nottingham Trent University

Martin will look at defining, understanding and coping with those employees that go way beyond the awkward and difficult. Those that do it their way and follow their rules, not yours. Those who drain time and energy from staff at all levels and ultimately damage the very core of a team or organisation.

Masterclass 4: Why Mediation Works; Lorna Wilson & Gillian Mason, Senior Acas Advisers

We’re not quite at the stage where mediation is compulsory before entering or finishing litigation. Acas will promote the benefits of mediation and illustrate, through role play, the process of workplace mediation.

Masterclass 5: Workers or Shirkers; Leading Employment and Commercial Barrister, Daniel Barnett

Following on from our recent Seminar for Solicitors & HR Executives, Daniel Barnett is back, this time with a session around managing employees who you suspect are not being genuine around their absence. Daniel will cover: 8 pointers to malingering; symptom validity testing; the Minnesota Multiphasic Inventory test; the Lees-Haley Fake Bad scale; what to do if an employee refuses a medical check and some case law from the Tribunal.

Malingerers are a problem for both sides of the industrial equation. Unions don't like malingerers as they can damage the union's credibility, but they also want to be sure that their members aren't falsely assumed to be malingering. This talk addresses everyone’s concerns.

Ask the Panel – Employment Relations Q&A

Our panel of experts, including Daniel Barnett and Martin Smith, will field audience questions.
