Managing diversity in the workplace

A diverse workforce contributes to growth and productivity, and equality and diversity policies help ensure that organisations employ and retain the very best people for the job.

In this session we look at some of the often complex workplace issues that employers may face when managing a diverse workforce. We will examine common instances of discrimination, help clarify where risks may lie for an employer and show delegates how to manage these situations more effectively.

Business need

Employment Tribunal cases involving discrimination can be time consuming, disruptive and potentially very costly to employers.

This event will focus on workplace behaviours in relation to the protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act; Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage and civil partnership, Pregnancy and maternity, Race, Religion or belief, Sex discrimination and Sexual orientation.

The potential issues are far ranging and complex. Drawing upon our experience we will provide examples of where things can (and often do) go wrong, and more importantly, show you how you can get it right.

Some of the scenarios we will cover include:

  • Is it okay for managers to ask staff to speak (only) English in the workplace?
  • Can staff put up Christmas decorations if not all staff celebrate Christmas?
  • Are you allowed to ask women to cover up in the workplace?
  • When could ‘friendly banter’ overstep the mark?
  • Can you prohibit staff from wearing religious dress?

All delegates will receive an electronic certificate of attendance for their participation in the training.
